WOT
MORE?

Gold leaf has been used to decorate manuscripts and paintings for hundreds of years.  Did you know that it takes approximately 100 sheets of gold leaf, to reach the thickness of a sheet of newspaper?

HELLO
AGAIN!

A Meeting With The Emperor

(size 50mm x 61mm)

watercolour & gold leaf
on vellum

The Emperor dragonfly, is to be
found where there are ponds, canals and rivers.  He can be seen in the summer months
between June & August. The male ( painted here)
is a brilliant blue.

To apply gold leaf, Phillippa uses Illuminators quality transfer gold leaf -- which is slightly thicker than standard, and easier to use than a beaten sheet. The gold size and leaf, are purchased from Cornellisen's art shop in London. Gold size is applied to the area to be gilded, allowed to dry, then breathed on.  The leaf is cut approximately to the size required and then applied with a soft squirrel artist's mop brush.  The tissue paper is then carefully removed, the gilded area allowed to harden, and finally gently brushed with the squirrel mop for a brilliant shine!

If you have had enjoyment looking at this gallery too, then why not look at
Phillippa's next gallery on the fourth page  and see what surprises are in store for you!  All the miniature paintings that you are viewing are original ideas and creations by Phillippa, painted in her studio in the rural countryside of Lincolnshire.

If the miniature of your choice is painted on vellum, please ensure that your country will accept an artwork painted on vellum to avoid disappointment.  (Vellum is a natural product made from the skin of either calf or sheep, and lasts many hundreds of years.  In medieval times, monks used vellum for illuminated bible manuscripts.  Many of these original manuscripts can be viewed in museums and galleries today!)
