Phillippa began painting miniatures in 1988 as a therapeutic challenge following a stroke that led to a weakness on her right hand side. The frogs, toads, newts and small creatures that lived in her garden were an immediate source of inspiration after she had mastered the basic skills of watercolour painting again. As a further challenge to her dexterity, Phillippa became interested in painting miniatures after she read a book written by Elizabeth Davys Wood. With the help, support and encouragement of the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists she was able to start exhibiting her work in the summer of 1993. In 1994 she became a full member of the society, and in 1997 won The Llewellyn Alexander award for her lively miniature of a frog string quintet, called 'The Trout.'

The environment within which amphibians and small mammals live, is a delicate balance that today is all too easily eroded not just by ultra violet radiation, but also by slug pellets and other pesticides, plus the unsympathetic use of wooden decking and an obsession with unnaturally 'tidy' gardens! The simplest way to help people recognise the value of these small creatures, is to draw on an awareness of what we may have in our back gardens. Phillippa hopes that her humorous and lively miniatures will do just that!

Following eight years of hard work painting miniatures, September 2002 saw Phillippa's ambition of becoming a full member of The Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, finally fulfilled! To view more of Phillippa's work depicting humorous small creatures, click the GALLERY to view miniatures that may be on sale, or to place commissions! (There are 13 more miniatures to view, why not have a quick look now?)

All Phillippa's miniature paintings are copyright, and may not be reproduced without her express written permission. Miniature paintings are from her imagination, often inspired by phrases, songs or poems. She never copies photographs, but makes detailed sketches of small animals and amphibians from life! Phillippa's past occupation as a designer/dressmaker in the clothing industry, leads to her rich imagination for the costumes and colour combinations illustrated in her work. Using only the finest artist's watercolour paints, gold leaf and top quality cards, papers or vellum, her initial idea for a miniature is carefully planned and drawn to the final size of the finished work. This careful planning stage may take many hours, but she believes that the end results will reflect this careful drafting. Prices for her work are not necessarily reflected in the size; this is because miniatures can take anywhere between one to twelve weeks to reach final completion.
